2025 Election

Regional Executive and Board of Directors

It’s the time of year where the membership has a chance to decide on the leadership of the club. This year we have five people running for the three Board of Directors positions and one person running for the Regional Executive position. Voting starts October 18 and will end November 3. Results will be announced at the annual meeting which will be conducted via Zoom. All voting will be done via the SCCA national website. There will be no paper ballots. Any questions can be directed to Blake Tatum at blaketatum@sfrscca.org.

Region Members:

As drivers and workers, we are immersed in the excitement and sounds of the race track, in the camaraderie of pulling off a well-run weekend, in battling on track for position or for top time of the day.  For many of us, each event is the highlight of the month.  Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate how much work it takes to organize and execute eight Regional events each season. I’m running for the Board to further my commitment to the continued success of our Region.

Professionally, I’ve been a patent attorney for over 35 years, counseling many clients not just about inventions, technology and overall business strategy.  I’ve been a strategic advisor to multiple startups, helping with intellectual property strategy, product design, and technology fit to potential markets.  I have also served on HOA boards.

For the past several years I have worked behind the scenes with Board members on numerous issues. Now is the time for me to step up to a more active role.  I can contribute to the Region providing guidance and making sure that the Board acts consistently with the Bylaws and the GCR, but also helping the Region identify potential opportunities to expand its offerings to reach a broader audience.

Overall, the Region faces a number of challenges—increasing costs, competition from other clubs, declining membership participation.  There will be no easy answers to balancing the many different concerns and priorities of our members.

One of the key concerns of our members is the cost of racing.  Unfortunately, many of our event costs are fixed and out of our control—particularly the rental rates for Laguna and Sonoma.  We need to identify additional revenue beyond entry fees to help cover these costs.  These may include sponsorship programs, more interesting and varied types of racing events targeting potential new members, and activities and offerings for our spectators and guests during our Regionals.

Recently, I designed and executed the membership demographic survey to better understand our members’ participation and interests, as a first step in developing a sponsorship program. I organized the Parade Laps at Sonoma which made the event more interesting for our guests and spectators.  I intend to continue to develop and promote additional types of activities during regionals.

Our competitors, such as NASA and GridLife, have seen increases in attendance while we have seen losses.  While we should not just copy these series, we must adapt to what the market is looking for, while preserving the spirit and community that is the core of the Region.

Another concern of members is a cluster of issues around driver conduct: overly aggressive driving, car-to-car contact, lots of black and yellow flags, result in less green flag laps for everyone.  As a racer, I look forward to close racing with drivers I can trust.  We need to clarify our racing rules but also emphasize that good racing ultimately depends on good judgment in the moment, prioritizing safety and “bringing it home in one piece” over heroics.

I look forward to serving on the Board and moving the Region forward.

Success is driven by consistency! For our region to achieve growth across all venues, programs, and platforms, electing me to be a BOARD MEMBER is key.

Passion for our sport has pushed me to take a lead role helping to guide the San Francisco Region. My belief is that the Region must be run better. For too long we have been needing significant change that benefits every member.

My COMMITMENT TO EVERY SCCA MEMBER

Improvement is a responsibility and promise I take seriously. Your vote validates my direct-action initiatives to make the changes necessary for positive growth and long-term stability.

Volunteer work is an essential service I feel strongly about. From a board level perspective, I have had the opportunity to become involved, report findings, and take actions that has created positive change. Observing issues firsthand has permitted me the ability to deliver genuine impactful corrective action regarding equipment preparation and procedural roadblocks preventing us from responding swiftly to on-track incidents.

My commitment to SFR SCCA continues to expand with every member’s communication. Listening to the growing concerns voiced against the regions current direction it is necessary I continue to fight for our interests. Members want to have their opinions heard, and importantly acted upon. We empower Board members to take responsibility as elected representatives.

YOUR VOTE and Our continued conversations are the path forward for your involvement to help me work harder for everyone. You are being heard!

My racing journey began in 2012, and since earning my competition license in 2015, I’ve been fortunate to experience the sport from many perspectives—behind the wheel, in the paddock, and in leadership roles. One of my proudest moments was serving as crew chief for the winning team at the 2018 Runoffs at Sonoma in Spec Miata, an experience that showed me the teamwork, dedication, and spirit that make our community so special.

In 2021, I founded ESi Motorsports, where I now support about 15 Spec Miatas in the San Francisco Region. This work has given me the unique opportunity to engage with a wide range of members—from new drivers just starting out to seasoned competitors—listening to their experiences, challenges, and ideas. I’ve seen firsthand what’s working well in our region and where we can continue to grow and improve.

At 32 years old, I bring a younger perspective to the Board. Two key issues I want to address are low entries and race contact incidents. I believe we can grow our club by investing in stronger marketing, outreach, and community-building efforts to bring in new racers. At the same time, I’d like to help reduce race contact by improving our systems for tracking incidents and encouraging open conversations, so competition stays hard-fought but respectful.

My priorities are to strengthen programs, support volunteers, and foster an environment where every participant—drivers, crew, and workers alike—feels valued and included. I’m excited about the opportunity to give back to the community that has given me so much, and I would be honored to represent you on the Board.

Linda Rogaski

Hi, I’m Linda Rogaski and I am running for the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Region.  It has been a challenging few years for the Region; but I am very pleased to say that we are moving towards better times.  We need to continue the momentum, controlling our expenses and increasing our revenue.  Because of the negative flow of money we have had to use the Thunderhill stipend to cover our expenses the last few years; but this year, we have really cut back on overhead and been able to stick to our budget.  Because of the belt tightening, we will be able to use close to half of the 2025 stipend to invest in the club in 2026.

The Auto-X Chapters are seeing some of the investment dollars.  The Region is covering the cost of the auto-x site for the three Chapters to conduct a Region-wide championship event.  Hopefully, this will become an annual event encouraging more drivers to participate from all three Chapters which will help build their chapter participation levels.  Auto-x is a lot of fun if you haven’t been to one lately I encourage you to check it out.

We need to focus on increasing our membership.  In road racing we need more workers and drivers.  Our worker base is aging.  We need to figure out how to recruit and retain a younger worker contingent.  The competition for time and money is extremely tough.  The rental costs for two of the three tracks we race at our astronomical. We need to come up with workable strategies to encourage folks to invest their money, time and energy with us.

We have tried different things this year to encourage more driver participation, some have been successful and some not so much.  I truly think the corn-hole competition was the best! We need to continue to be creative with our schedules, awards, etc., and have fun!

If something doesn’t work then we won’t do it again, but if it does work we are going to keep moving forward and will build on it.

I want new members (and old) to understand the family supportive atmosphere this Region provides.  The old saying that “I came for the cars, but stayed for the people” is true.  I’ve been an active member of SCCA for more than 40 years, and I’m proud to say I’m a member of SFR.  I am available at Registration at every road racing event, I also pop up at some Sacramento Chapter events, please come tell me your ideas and thoughts.  We will succeed as a team not as individuals!

I believe I have the right set of skills and experience to help move the Region forward. Please vote for me.

GREG HOFF

I am currently on the Board of Directors and running for re-election.  I believe I still have a lot to contribute to this club, especially now that I am finally up to speed.   I originally ran for board because I saw the same problems all of you do.  When I was elected, I found out things are much more complicated than I had realized, and it took a year to even understand the issues.   I believe the current board under Mike Smith’s leadership is on the right track.  We have reduced our operating losses by about $200K in spite of increased costs across the board and, after our Thunderhill dividend, will be profitable this year.

The current board is not “business as usual”.   We are trying new things, some of which have worked and some of which have not.  The key is we are willing to try new ideas.   We have increased on track time (although I admit the current implementation of “follow by” could use some fine tuning).   Along with Bill Booth, I pushed for the three-race format which some groups have adopted, and others have decided against.  At least now there is a choice.  I will take the blame for gridding according to finishing position.  That was an attempt to get people to finish races.  Not sure whether it worked or not – you can always give your opinion, and I will listen.  I will always advocate for other changes that group majorities request and as time and logistics allow.

I want to bring back social or at least Saturday night beer – and I had a couple of not very well advertised kegs at Laguna.  I am the Sonoma liaison responsible for relations with the track.  I am currently trying to move our early season race to later in the spring where it will be less weather affected.  I am also the Group 7 Miata leader.  Despite my constant lobbying to make Miata racing better, I also understand that we are not a Spec Racer and Miata club and fully support any efforts to increase participation in the other groups and classes.  I encourage everyone to participate even if it’s just to email the board with ideas.  I am very good at responding to emails and try to explain the relevant issues and ideas to others.  If you believe the club needs to change with the times, I believe I can represent you well on this board.

In my opinion, all the current candidates for the Board can do a great job.  They are already participating behind the scenes.  I would like to ask whether you vote for me or not, please consider voting for Linda Rogaski.  She is one of the key backbones of this club right now, with a wealth of information and experience.  I am making this request because I truly believe the club will suffer without her on the Board.

Mike Smith

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for working with me over the last year. We’ve made good headway at making SFR a better place for amateur racing.  We’ve tried some new ideas, some have worked well, and some have shown us why we don’t want to do that again! And along the way I appreciate the support you have given all of us.

We had four key goals for 2025. One, to increase track time by trying new scheduling techniques. Two, to try some new ideas at our events Three, to reduce our financial losses by half.  And four to build a budget to rebuild the Road Race Program. None of these happened without change, which is often hard and not without some discomfort.

It’s looking good to achieve our third and fourth goal, and we are in the process of setting up spending budgets for what will become our surplus Thunderhill Dividend money on ideas to rebuild our Road Race car counts. We had a great in person Board meeting in August and drafted ideas which will become our 2026 plan.

What’s next?

We organized a Zoom call with the other west coast SCCA Regions and merged all our tentative 2026 schedules so we could do our best at cutting down on conflicts. We will have a follow-up zoom meeting on Sept 24th to see how we’re doing. That’s not to say everything will be perfect but we’re all trying to make racing on the west coast as good as it can be.

In the off season the Board members, Dottie and I are working at redrafting our procedures to match some of the changes we have made and implement the ideas we gained from this year and in some cases fix procedures that did not work right this year.

I’m looking for couple of new Worker positions. 1) We did some lunchtime drive arounds, and they were a big hit. But they need to be done safely. I’m looking for someone who with proper training will take on the job as ‘Lunch Time Drive Around Pace Car Leader”. 2) We had a good time putting on a Corn Hole contest at Thunderhill and want to do more after event activities for both Drivers and Workers.  Next year we will be starting some drawings for prizes and perhaps entries. With that in mind I’m looking for a “Fun Leader” to run the new programs. Anyone interested in either of these positions can email me mikes@sfrscca.com

Lookiing forward to 2026,

Mike
