Breaking News!

SFR changes to National Street Touring Sport 2-seater (STS2) Class.
The San Francisco Regional ST2 class will adopt the SCCA national STS2 rules and be renamed to STS2.

What's the difference? The STS2 rules are slightly more restrictive. Only normally-aspirated cars with engine displacement 1.9 Liters or less are allowed, and the '99+ Miata and MR2 Spyder are specifically excluded. Cars are also limited to the stock viscous limited slip or non limited slip differential.

Why the change? In short, it is because STS2 is likely to become a permanent national class next year, and we now have the local T2 street tire class for the cars which aren't eligible for STS2.

Some history: ST2 was a set of rules drafted and agreed on by several autocrossers across the country who wanted a class like STS which allowed sports cars. They used a car's Stock classification as the basis for eligibility, allowing 2-seaters from CS, ES, GS, and HS. They decided to the STX rule on differentials because Torsen differentials were a common factory option on Miatas, and Miatas were expected to be very popular in the class.

STS2 was a set of rules drafted by the SCCA Street Touring Advisory Committee and approved by the Solo Events board. They were much more similar to the existing STS rules, with eligibility based on engine displacement and no additional allowance for differentials.

The San Francisco Region adopted ST2 for the 2004 season just before STS2 was announced. In 2005, ST2 was kept as-is because the majority of the local competitors were in cars that were not eligible for STS2, and there was no other street tire class that they were eligible for. In 2006, nothing much had changed so ST2 continued as-is.

For 2007, the San Francisco Region Solo Steering Committe decided to change from ST2 to STS2 for several reasons:

  1. The introduction of the 2006 Miata, which has the potential to be significantly faster than the fastest STS2 cars. "Real" STS2 cars can no longer keep up just due to sheer driving talent.
  2. T2, the indexed street tire class for Street Prepared and Street Mod classes which was introduced last year, has come into its own. Any car which was eligible for ST2 is also eligible for T2, and having two very similar classes dilutes the competition.
  3. STS2 has shown great popularity on the national level and will probably be made permanent after the national championships next year. The region would like to encourage local participation in this relatively new class, as well as get a head start on matching the national class structure for 2008.

For more information about the rules of STS2, see section 14 of the national rules, which can be downloaded from the Solo Cars & Rules section of SCCA.com.

For more information about the SFR local T2 class, see the Supplemental Regulations on the SFR Solo web site.

SNELL 95 Helmets or Newer required in 2007  Note that this is not a new rule, as Solo rules have always required helmets of the latest Snell Standard, or one of the two previous standards.  Since a Snell 2005 Standard was issued, Snell 90 and earlier helmets are no longer legal.  Note that Snell recommends helmets be discontinued from use after 5 years due to wear and chemical aging of components.
Helmets meeting the SFI standards 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, or 41.2A are also acceptable.

KEEP AUTOCROSS ALIVE!
VOLUNTEER TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!
SFR Solo has several key positions unfilled.  Without help, the solo program may be in trouble.  Please give back to your sport and volunteer to help us out.

Positions:

Motorhome Manager
Recruits drivers to bring the motorhome to and from all events.  Deals with storage office where motorhome is kept, keeps track of motorhome problems and gets maintenance done as needed.  Brings motorhome problems to the Steering Committee for resolution.

Grid Chief
Recruits and trains a team of grid workers; may select workers for grid when requested by event chair.  Develops good grid practices for the particular SFR events and sites, and causes them to be implemented at our events.
This person should attend most SFR solo events, but need not be at every one.  The grid team actually does the grid work.

Motorhome Driver
We need volunteers to drive the motorhome to and from events.  Without a motorhome, no event will take place.  The Motorhome can tow your trailer to get your car to the event.  Occasionally a shuttle can be arranged to go get your car.  The Motorhome is located in Milpitas.  Please volunteer to drive to one event.

Timing Chief
Trains timing workers in operation of the Motorhome timing equipment; Keeps an eye on Timing operation and advises in case of unusual situations.  Identifies and trains skilled timing workers who can make sure that timing and scoring works efficiently and correctly in her/his absence.  Develops good timing practices for the particular SFR events and sites, and causes them to be implemented at our events.  Identifies equipment problems and assists the Equipment manager and Steering committee to solve them.
This person should attend most SFR solo events, but need not be at every one.  The timing team actually does the work.

Many other positions available.  Especially if you see some procedure or equipment that is not working perfectly, volunteer to fix it!

Thanks!!

SCCA MEMBERS ONLY -- Proof required to run
Due to the huge number of entrants we have been attracting to our events, it was decided in the past to limit entrants to SCCA members holding membership cards or emailed/FAXed proof of membership. This means unfortunately that you can no longer show up cold and run the same day. If you show up, you can walk the course, get a ride with another competitor, and discuss the sport with participants.

To join immediately, use the Join SCCA button at the top of this page or call the National Office (before 3 pm Pacific time): 800-770-2055. Note it will take approximately 3-4 weeks from the time you send in your membership form until you receive your membership card.....plan ahead appropriately!
[Updates 2007 Feb 01]

A Valid Drivers License MUST be produced at registration at each event in order to compete. SCCA Solo 2 rules, Section 4.1 states "Drivers must possess a valid automobile driver's license." SFR interprets this rule to mean that the driver's license must be in the possession of the driver at registration, and displayed to the registrar. If you are unable to produce your valid driver's license you will not be allowed to run.

(Note that there are many other requirements you have to meet before you can race.)
