SFR Solo2 Round 8 The San Francisco Region Championship Series reached the half way point at 3Com Park on June 11th with round 8 cochaired by Mark Watson and Kevin Lahey. Despite some participants going to Oakland which had been canceled for some time 240 drivers made it to Candlestick Point for an alternately warm and breezy day as winds occasionally gusted off the bay to cool things down. Reminder: Call the hotline or check the www.sfrscca.org website to confirm future events. The Wheel has a long lead time for publication. Jim Ochi drove his BMW M3 to his fourth win on the season in the first run group running in the tight E Street Prepared battle for points supremacy. Jim is currently 2nd in points. Tony Ozello who is third in points also placed his Formula WS6 Pontiac ahead of points leader Kirk Meline, driving a Mustang. Fourth place went to fifth in points Terry Campbell, Mustang over fourth in points Marco Solorio, BMW M3. Michael Santos took another win in the Rookie Class in his Mustang, besting Chris Warner, Eagle Talon, and maintaining his points lead. Joe Friedmann drove a BMW to third and is fourth in points behind Heather Santos, Mustang, who finished fourth on the day. In group 2 Ben Martinez, Arie Villasol, and Rick Myllenbeck gave a triple D Street Prepared Ford Capri spanking to points leader Don Lew in his Toyota Supra. In D Stock John Lawrence trimmed Patrick Jones' points lead in the Neon class. Jesse Wills reclaimed second place in points with a win in G Stock over four BMW 325i's driven by Erik Hines, Rickey Hines, Marvin Martin, and Logan Davis. Carlos Gomez continued to roll over the Rookie Class with another win. Elbert Chin took second over second in points George Chiou. The third group saw Dan DeGruchy take his first A Stock win over points leader Jerry Mouton and now third in points, Eric Cheung. E.J. Bayliss made it 2 out of 3 over Shelly Berg, both in A Stock Toyota MR2 Turbos. Shelly leads the points race handily. Rick Gould took B Stock again over points leader Boyle and third in points Kevin Lahey, and fourth in points Andrew Jensen. All in those MX5 thingies. Scot Zediker found his way back to the front of C Stock to maintain his points lead. Third in points Chris Herring claimed second place over second in points Dennis Armstrong. Bill Newton who was not driving a Mazda but a Porsche 912 took fourth. The Rookie Class had a repeat of Kevin Kluge, BMW M3, with a big time points lead over Sean Kearney and Karl Glynn. Tony Tobacco drove the best placed Miata to sixth and is watching Glynn's BMW Z3 close in rapidly on his second place in season points. The last morning run group witnessed Barry Chafin wait until the last run to horse the somewhat large Maxima around in a clean run for 1.3 second victory in Street Touring - S. Street Touring - R was the usual Soebe, Mark Watson, Dan Pina, Chok Balmaceda affair. Soebe could take two events off without drops and still maintain the lead over Chok and Mark. Jeff Finder, Maxima, took his first Rookie Class win to maintain second in points over fifth in points Richard Reeves, Integra, and third in points Elton Hom, Civic. In Group 5 Don Campbell found his way up the access road and cruised to a 2.4 second victory in A Street Prepared. Chris Boynton claimed second place and the season points lead. Rob Boynton maintained third in points besting second in points Jeffrey Gordon whose RX7tt was suffering from a flat battery. In C Street Prepared Travis Lane copped his first win of the year in his deadly black BMW M3. Don Ebaugh maintained his second in points status with a second place over Vitaly Iourtchenko and third in points Steve Sherwood. The we come to Super Stock. Just two events ago I reported how boring this class was with the same guy winning all the time. Then the points leader stays away, and then he comes back and gets beaten by his codriver. So today we have a total of one entrant in the class. Now, normally I don't report on classes without competition, but this one is a story unto itself. Kevin Stevens, with no pressure, sets what was at the time the fastest time of day (and what stood as the best PAXed run all day) on his second run and packs it up. Has he scared all the competition away? Has he challenged them to come back and not take this lying down? Time will tell. The Rookie Class went to Jeff Singer, Boxster S, Boz Elloy surely giving away more than 3/10ths of a second with me riding along in the BMW M Roadster on his third run, points leader Josh Schaefer, M Coupe, Eric Gangloff, Corvette, and Jack Stone, RX7 took 2nd through 5th. In run group 6 Katie Kelly, sticking with Lucy the Miata, won the PAX class by, oh, six indexed seconds to take the season points lead. Also taking the points lead with a win in the Street Tire Class was David Parker albeit by a mere 07/100ths over fourth in points Carl Merritt, Dennis McLaughlin, Patrick Simmons, and third in points Peter Thana. In the seventh group top time of day, second fastest on the day, third fastest, fifth fastest, and seventh fastest went to the Open Street Prepared Class. Points leader Tito Solis took the win by less than 2/100ths over current Champion Archie Collantes. Mert Solis maintained third in points with a third place over Bong Solis and Gino Coscolluela. 23rd fastest time out of 240 entrants was good for 8th place turned in by Howell Leung in the Creasy Cobra. That's Creasy as in James, and the Cobra is quite clean looking. Rookie points leader Soslan Kibilov open up his lead a bit with a win over Edwin Rodriquez and George Kibilov. In the last group Neal Ryan scored his second E prepared win over codriver and codeveloper of the Fiat, Dwayne Komush, and points leader Neil Verity in the super clean and white MGB. Rich Urschel scored a disappointing 8th fastest time of day in A Prepared having opened up the little Elan's throats but having popped less than ideals jets in. Still the time was good for the win as the 948cc Sprite-engined Kelly Seven A owned by Pat (APL) and driven by John in the open class couldn't keep enough momentum to shine on this day. Durk Edwards took his fourth win in F Street Prepared over second in points Scott Fraser, third in points Sean Wheeler, and fourth in points Jo Jo Collantes. Nice of you guys to finish in the proper points order to keep things simple. Larry Sharp swept H Stock for the third event in a row, this time over John Lerke in a Civic. E Stock went to Greg Chiocco in a Civic Si in his first appearance in the class. Points leader Alan Gruner, Civic Si, took second over Michael Leary, Corolla, and third in points Steve Bowlus, Saturn SL2. The Rookie Class went to Martin Cabral's Starlet in his second appearance over points leader Calvin Wan, Corolla, fourth in points Carlos Evangelista, Corolla, and second in points Jeremy Bergsman, Integra. -- Rich Urschel
