SFR Solo2 Round 6 The San Francisco Region Championship Series returned to the Coliseum in Oakland for the third time since the slurry coat resurfacing of the parking lots last July. As expected, the surface provided more grip than in March of this year, but somewhat disappointingly the surface is still yielding a considerable amount of fine gravel which accumulates during the day. The first group out had their choice of lines but driving technique would rule the day. In A Stock Jerry Mouton made it five in a row winning handily in the white Porsche Carrera over Taka Aono in an MR2, second place points holder Dan DeGruchy in another Porsche, and Kit Wetzler, in a Honda S2000. In B Stock Kevin Lahey solicited and listened to some gray beard advice about slowing down for the tight corners well enough to get the power down early and just nipped Craig Boyle for the win. Kevin moves to second in points behind Craig and just ahead of Keith Hearn who finished fourth on the day. Andrew Jensen took third in yet another Miata. In C Stock the 1.6 liter Miatas suffered no indignities at the hands of the B Stock 1.8 liter MX5's with Chris Herring just pipping Kevin Lahey's time. Points leader Scot Zediker came second and is beginning to wonder where that winning feeling went. 1999's Rookie CSP Champion Dennis Armstrong took third and is currently second in points on the year. Chris' win moves him to third in points ahead of Doug Gentges who finished fourth on the day. Kevin Kluge took top time of the group running in the rookie class with a BMW M3. Second was Karl Glynn in the BMW Z3 Coupe admitting to not quite being over the (too) late-braking syndrome. Thomas Juong took third in a Miata. Tony Tabacco's Miata was back in 5th but he maintains second in points behind Kevin. The second group out still had a relatively clean course and Soebe Soebiantoro took advantage of it to set top PAX time of day winning the Street Touring R Class yet again in Chok Balmaceda's Integra GSR. Mark Watson grabbed second and is third in points. Sheening Lin finished third and is fourth in points. Chok remains second in points but could not better fourth on the day. In Street Touring S Barry Chafin tried to take a page from co-chair Ben Martinez's book to not let attending to all the niggling details of the events operation distract him from driving in top form. So we hooked him up on his first run with a lovely young lady considering autocrossing her Maxima and Barry went out and nailed an astounding eleven cones. Perhaps he was trying to give her the impression there would be no competent competition if she decided to run. Barry cleaned it up on his second and third runs but not enough to avoid losing to Jay Parcon's second best indexed run in a Honda Prelude. Greg Umbay took third on the day and is trailing Barry in the points race. Street Modified was somewhat routine with Jim Zalesny taking his fifth win of the season over George Matuszek in a Honda CRX and Jamie Ruderman in a Mazda MX3. The rookie group went to Tony Munoz, Prelude, Chris Ku, Civic, second in points Jeff Finder, Maxima, and third in points Elton Hom, Civic. Corvettes came to play in the third group but the always winning boring one stayed home. Kevin Stevens claimed the Super Stock win and second place in points with a run good enough for 6th fastest and 4th best PAX time on the day over fourth in points Fred Van Wagenen. Niles Baker took a Mazda RX7 to third. In the lightly subscribed B Street Prepared class Ray Razon won in a Corvette over points leader Keith Mendia in a Corvette and Frank Burkeen in a Datsun 240Z. A Street Prepared repeated the results of round 5 with Chris Boynton continuing to close in on points leader Jeffrey Gordon with Rob Boynton running in third. Corey Smith took his Audi S4 to it's second win in C Street Prepared over Travis Lane, BMW M3, who has dramatically improved over three events from 7th to 5th to 2nd. Corey takes the points lead over Don Ebaugh who finished fourth. Steve Sherwood took third on the day and is third in points. Jeff Singer won the rookie class in his second attempt in a Porsche Boxster S over Josh Schaefer who is tied for the points lead. David Tchankotanze put a Porsche 911 in third place. In the last of the morning run groups Arie Villasol won the PAX class driving his FSP MGB. There's nothing else to say. He won. That's it. Dave Rowney drove the BMW 328i to another win and reclaimed sole possession of the points lead in the Street Tire Class. Trygve Isaacson put the Boxster in second. Carl Merritt placed third to take over the fourth place points position and David Parker finished fourth slipping back to second in points. Peter Thana took 5th and holds 5th in points. For the afternoon groups considerable gravel had accumulated even on the "clean" line and the first slalom had to be moved outboard one car width due to an oil-soaked patch of slurry coat breaking up. Vernon head promptly set fast time of day running solo in the F125 Shifter Kart Class. Son Derek went but 3.9 seconds slower in a Junior Kart running in class 3. Chris Spencer make good use of a test session to take his second win and tie second place finisher Cameron Kahangi for second in points behind Elyse Mottaz who finished third ahead of fourth place points holder Amanda Kahangi. Steven Goldine borrowed the Spencer Kart for a run in Class 2. Barry Spencer brought out the Lotus Europa for the first time in eight months and posted the undisputed best time of day for automobiles with the fibreglas in his nose pod still curing. Barry Goldine shared the Europa in the E Modified Class. In Open Street Prepared Archie Collantes bested 22 other drivers for his first win of the season. Tito Solis claimed second place half a second and 70 points back of Archie. Third went to Bong Solis tied for 5th in points. Fourth was Mert Solis, third in points, followed by Howell Leung (8th in points), Anthony Abeleda (11th), Joey delos Trinos (7th), and Gino Coscolleula (tied for 5th). Edwin Rogriguez took the rookie class win in a Toyota Celica over George and Soslan Kibilov who are now tied for the points lead. Jojo Bayabo finished fourth and carries third place seasonal points. In the sixth run group Dwayne Komush dropped Neal Ryan's oil on the course to cause a considerable delay and much dryall to be added to the existing gravel at the bumpiest, slickest, hardest braking corner on the course. Neal managed one run in the Fiat 124 prior to the incident to take second place to E Prepared points leader Neil Verity's MGB. After throwing out his student and a loose floor mat (between runs), Rich Urschel's A Prepared Lotus Elan managed a squeaker win over John Kelly's Lotus Seven A which stood on it's first run's time. Rich was credited with a super fast time on his third run but it was surely a timer error as the previous car was given the same identical time. Pat Kelly's competition in APL failed to materialize so she contented herself with the joys of Lotusing, autocrossing, and visiting many a friend. In F Street Prepared Scott Fraser, VW GTI, turned some very quick times to take the win and the points lead back from Durk Edward's Toyota Corolla. Sean Wheeler, Sirocco, captured third place and is fourth in points. Ed Chang convincingly won E Stock for the fifth time in his Honda Civic over Alan Gruner, Civic, Jeff Hodde, Integra, and Todd Codinha, VW Rabbit. Larry Sharp returned in his Ford Focus to take the H Stock win and reclaim the points lead. Zach Scibior, Integra, took second and is fourth in points. Au Nguyen placed third and is third in points. Calvin Wan won the rookie class for the second event in a row and took over the points lead. Chrisitian Ellingson drove a Honda Civic to second followed by Greg Chiocco also in a Civic. Now tied for second in points, Stan Guidero, CRX, and Jeremy Bergsman, Integra placed fourth and fifth. Run Group 7 saw the usual close battle in E Street Prepared won for the third time by Kirk Meline, Mustang, followed by Tony Ozello, third in points, Navid Kahangi, and Jim Ochi, second in points to Kirk. Chris Warner, Eagle Talon, took his first win in the rookie class to close the points gap on second place finisher Michael Santos, Ford Mustang. Brian Chow and Eric Silva took the next two spots in Chevrolet Camaro Z28s. In the last run group, completed by 5:15pm, Donald Lew drove his Toyota Supra to win number four over Darryl Cheung, BMW 1600, and Kristi Soo Hoo, Ford (sold by Mercury in the 1970's) Capri. John Lawrence took a close D Stock win over Dan Williamson to tighten up the race for second place seasonal points. Peter Mottaz eked out a half second G Stock win on the course now resembling kitty litter more than asphalt, still managing a third best PAX time. Stuart Langager finished second and is third in points in an Eagle Talon Tsi. Joe Mercado and Marvin Martin made it three out of the top four for BMW 325i's. The rookie group's Carlos Gomez drove his Integra Type R to a fourth win and second place in points over Michael Donlon, fourth in points, and Elbert Chin, third in points. George Chiou fell to midpack but maintains the points lead. -Rich Urschel
