SFR travels to Stockton for Round 4 by Rich Urschel On April 2nd 157 of the more serious SFR competitors traveled to the Stockton Fairgrounds for round 4 of the 16-event season. Starting an hour earlier thanks to the change back to standard time allowed a return to four runs and an end to last group runs in twilight. Kristi Soo Hoo, Ben Martinez, and Brian McKenzie co-chaired with Ben again designing the course. Working with the limited space in Stockton Ben gave us a challenging mix of one short straight followed by one 90 degree corner, slow turn arounds, optional slaloms and a bumpy sweeper. Times ranged from 36 seconds to over a minute. In the first run group Don McKenna worked down to a 40.282 to take Super Stock on his fourth run over co-driver Steve Hobaugh at 40.526, Kevin Stevens at 40.977, and Fred Van Wagenen at 41.509. A Street Prepared fell to Don Campbell's Viper at 40.173 over Chris and Rob Boynton in the Porsche 993TT. Jeffrey Gordon salvaged fourth place to maintain second in points behind Don. In the second run group Chris Cox grabbed best PAX time of day running McKenna's Corvette in the PAX class. Jim Martin took second in his for-sale RX7tt, with Derek Butts claiming third in a borrowed ride in the Neidel Boxster. Teresa maintains a 40 point lead on the season. Mark Searles walked off with the Street Tire Class piloting his Miata some three tenths faster than codriver Charlie Davis. Ben Martinez claimed third in the Porsche 944t. In the third group Louie Martinez ran away in the delos Trinos Corolla. Archie Collantes claimed second in Jo Jo's FSP Corolla and moved up to second in points behind Louie. Jun delos Trinos claimed third while Howell Leung got the new Creasy Cobra up to fourth. Mike Lella ended any further discussion of top time of day honors posting a 36.696 in the Ralt RT-5. Cameron Kahangi got it together in Junior Karts to win convincingly over Elyse Mottaz and Amanda Kahangi. Elyse leads in season points. In the final morning run group Alan Gruner, Civic, took the E Stock win and moved to the season points lead. Danny Arteaga, Corolla, took second at the event over Brian McKenzie, Civic, and moves to third in points. Russ Bowlus, Civic, took H Stock over Larry Sharp, Focus, and Au Nguyen, Integra. Larry leads the points race over Russ and Au. John Kelly, Lotus 7A, had Rich Urschel, Lotus Elan, covered in A Prepared until the fourth run when Rich found 1.1 seconds to take the win and increase his points lead. Neal Ryan took his Fiat 124 to the E Prepared win by a few tenths over codriver Dwayne Komush and Neil Verity in his MGB. Verity holds the points lead over Komush and Ryan. Arie Villasol took his MGB to first in F Prepared over scott Fraser, VW Rabbit, who took second place and the points lead over Durk Edwards, Corolla. In the morning rookie classes Brian Weber, BMW M coupe, took third in group one to maintain third in points. In the fourth group Stan Guidero took the CRX HF to first over Jeremy Bergsman, Integra, tying him for the points lead. Steve Smith, Civic, took fifth place to move up to third in points. In the afternoon, Kirk Meline, Mustang, continued his run at the E Street Prepared Championship eclipsing Jim Ochi, BMW M3, by one thousandth second, and Tony Ozello, WS6, by twenty-six hundredths. Kirk increased his points lead over Jim and Tony. Victoria Meline claimed her third ESPL victory this time over Joyce Merkl in a Chevrolet Impala SS. In the fifth run group's rookie class Michael Santos, Mustang GT, took the win establishing a significant points lead. Hugh Simmons, Z28, took second, with Heather Santos third. Chris Warner, Talon, placed fourth and slipped to second in points. In D Stock Patrick Jones scored a narrow victory over John Lawrence and Dan Williamson. Patrick, Dan, and John hold the top three spots in Neon points. G Stock's Peter Mottaz lost his grip on top PAX time but still scored second best on the day winning the class over second in points Jesse Wills, Prelude, Ric Quinonez, Prelude, and third in points, Sean O'Boyle, Integra Type R. Carlos Gomez took the rookie class and second in points in his Integra Type R. Second place went to Joshua LeVesseur in a Prelude over points leader George Chiou, Integra. In the seventh group Jerry Mouton scored again in A Stock over Jim Barnes, Corvette, and second place points holder, Dan de Gruchy, Porsche 911. B Stock and second place in points went to Rick Gould over points leader Craig Boyle, and third place points holder, Philip Hogue. Chris Herring took C Stock over points leader Scot Zediker, and second in points Dennis Armstrong. Anthony Tabacco, Miata, rose to third in points in the group's rookie class with a win over second in points Alexander Komlik, MR2T, and points leader Kevin Kluge, BMW M3. In the last group Don Ebaugh, Civic, increased his CSP points lead with a win over the Audis of Corey Smith, Sharon Levy, and Steve Sherwood, as well as four other drivers in RX7s. Street Touring saw the rise of Mark Watson, Civic, to third in points with a win over points leader Soebe Soekamto who was but seven hundredths quicker than second place points holder Chok Balmaceda. In the last rookie group Jack Stone, RX7, moved up to third in points with a win over second place points holder Johannes Erdfelt, Audi S4. Special mention goes to Dan Jones who scored top scratch time of day on street tires in his 360 Modena Ferrari which accelerates faster than a Super Stock Corvette, has an amazing level of grip on Pirellis, a neat clutchless paddle shifter on the steering wheel, and an absolutely intoxicating smell of leather. Hey, give me a ride in YOUR Ferrari and I'll make up a performance distinction for you too. Thanks for the ride, Dan.
