SFR Solo2 Hosts Round 1 of the NorPac Divisional
By Rich Urschel with some scant help from the participants
Round 1 of the NorPac Divisional in Atwater counted as
rounds 10 and 11 in SFR's regular Championship Series.
120 SFR participants were joined by 10 Sacramento Cup
participants, 10 locals from the Fresno Chapter, and 60
Divisional participants from distant environs. Those 80
who don't participate regularly in the SFR series made
off with some 20,000 SFR points to make the events a
little less meaningful in the SFR season trophy hunts
for a few classes. On the other hand, SFR has it's fair
share and more of nationally competitive drivers, and many
travelers found the local competition to be quite stiff.
Bob Neal of Harbor City took Super Stock on both days,
but Don Mckenna scored a second and third with Kevin
Stevens placing third and fourth. Jim Martin managed
fifth on both days on a concrete surface offering at
least as much dust as grip.
David Colman and Rob Luis said no to five drivers visiting
A stock from Washington, taking first and second each
day. Anna Hedly of Kirkland, WA took A Stock Ladies on
both days with Judy Coleman second on Saturday and E.J.
Bayliss rising to second on Sunday.
SFR fared less well in BS, with George Doganis leading
Rad Vach each day by more than a second. Rod McLane
stepped up for the fourth place divisional trophy.
Two-time national BSL champion, NorPac Solo II
Divisional Steward, and Divisional Event Steward Katie
Elder greeted all comers with a 2.5 second victory in
B Stock Ladies.
C Stock went to Washington with Glen Hernandez and Kevin
Dietz leading Teresa Neidel and Derek Butts who were scoring
SFR points in the PAX class. Soebiantoro Soekamto took
official third place SFR C stock points both days with Sterling
McLane claiming fifth each day.
D Stock had no Regional entries by choice or default. Rookie
Doug Tejeda took the Divisional win over rookie Patrick
Simmons.
In E Stock Daniel Pina took the win Saturday but fell
to third on Sunday and third in the Divisional event
as well with a couple of DNFs and 3-cone third run.
F Stock found no visitors with Eric Martin, Joel Gussy,
Larry Baker, and Kert Miller lining up one through four
each day.
First and second in G Stock went to Tom Smith of
Huntington Beach and Ron Bauer of Bothell, WA in
Integra Type Rs. Ric Quinonez bested Eric O'Brien
and Jason Liao each day.
H Stock saw no entries from near or far.
A Street Prepared went to Wolfgang Hoeck from Thousand
Oaks, CA by 2.6 seconds over Val Korry of Seattle.
Jeffrey Gordon picked up third each day. Julie Lin of
Thousand Oaks led Regina Morec each day in ASPL.
B Street Prepared has been unusually competitive and
well subscribed this year in SFR, but with Rita Wilsey,
Jeff Glorioso, Vic Sias, and Tony Colecchio (in Vic's
car) taking the top four spots, Nell, Bonar, and Stark
were racing for fifth place points.
C Street Prepared belonged solely to SFR with current
National Champion Tom Ellam taking two more wins. Navid
Kahangi who "coulda been a rookie" this year continues
to impress with two second place finishes. Corey Smith,
Don Ebaugh, and Durk Edwards traded third through fifth,
with Jim Ochi taking two sixth place spots. Chris McKinney
of Fresno and Catherine Liao traded wins in CSPL.
SFR's D Street Prepared drivers pushed four out-of-staters
to the bottom of the list with Chris Cox taking 1 and 2,
Arie Villaso taking 3 and 1, Ben Martinez scoring 2 and
4, and Dave Jackson taking 4 and 3.
In E Street Prepared Sacramento's former National Champion
Ken Mitchell couldn't catch Lake Forest's Steven Equina
either day. Fred Van Wagenen led George Fisk, Jim Zalesny,
and Tony Ozello each day, but son Erick swept from 6th on
Saturday to third on Sunday to nip Fred for the third and
last divisional trophy. Many car owners would turn a co-
driver loose for less affrontery, but what's a dad going
to do but be proud? Brianne Mitchell swept Mary Frances
Fisk on both days in ESPL.
In AP John Kelly finished fourth both days in the Divisional
and third each day in the Regional events. Pat took second
in the Divisional APL class and two fourths in the Regional
AP class. See the OSP class for the missing link who carries
none of the 17 or so National Championship titles displayed
in this class. Bill Martin lead Saturday but gave way to
Craig Nagler who graciously shared his BMW M3 on Sunday
when Bill's Lotus Europa broke.
Rick Brown beat Bill Fleig on Saturday in BP, but slipped
to second on Sunday, probably due to listening to my
description of course conditions. Rick took the overall
Divisional title from National Champion Bill.
Four-time National Champion Frank Stagnaro found his
CP Shelby disconcertingly loose on Castle's dusty
concrete but codriver Mike Maier took the Divisional
title. SFR regular Derrick Bents picked up some points
for the Corvair while chasing five drivers in Mustangs.
Former National Champion Barbara Ogg clicked off another
win for the white and blue Shelby GT350 taking CPL over
Sharon Reuter of Redmond, WA and Suzanne Gutile of Fresno.
In DP Howard Wolf and Dwayne Komush claimed the top
spots on Saturday with Fresno's Chet Hansen and
Sacramento's Chris Kannan taking 1-2 Sunday. Howard
held on for the Divisional win. Pam Kannan took DPL.
The divisional EP trophy was snatched up by rookie
Rey Manalac running solo in Archie Collante's dubious
for even DP Toyota Starlet. As the car was one of several
carrying regional rather than divisional classification, it
slipped by impound as an OSP car. No one ran EP in
the Regional events.
A Modified had no entries at the divisional or
regional level.
B Modified belonged to Mike Lella with a four second
victory over Lorin Mueller of Eugene, OR and four
others.
The Christman's have been just getting up to speed
in their C Mod Tiga. Saturday saw Kevin within striking
distance of Guy Ankeny and Gary Richardson, and Karena
leading Mary Ankeny in CML. Unfortunately, a badly
corroded ground strap limited Kevin and Karena to a single
run each on Sunday. Guy and Mary took the Divisional
trophies home to Simi Valley.
D Modified and DML had drivers carrying over
25 National Championship titles in but two cars.
Chris O'Donnell took the two-day divisional title
by a scant 0.5 seconds over Ron Babb. Karen Babb
claimed DML. These folk have been giving Lotus
Elans a reputation as unbeatable for a long time.
E Modified saw former Lotus factory mechanic Barry
Spencer posting a 12 (twelve, not a typo, twelve)
second victory in his Lotus/Mazda that used to be a
Europa. For some reason, perhaps dizziness from
chasing entry forms down from Guam and trying to
sort out all the differing Divisional and Regional
class entries, Ralph Elder drove Vic Sias' BSP car
in the EM class. Gretchen Everett bested Joy Kreick,
both of Renton, WA in EML.
Jesse Wills had rare company in F Modified taking
the win over Mike Billings of Boise, ID, codriver
Tom, and Bill Quintero. Jesse's gorgeous Lynx is
for sale at a very reasonable price.
Eric West saved Street Touring for SFR taking the win
over Steve Wynne of Redmond, WA. Phil Esra took the
third and final Divisional trophy. Mark Watson claimed
a fourth and fifth with Chok Balmaceda finishing sixth
each day.
Open Street Prepared attracted Hung-jen Hung from
Los Angeles and five drivers from the Sacramento
and Fresno chapters. Archie Collantes sent out
codriver Jo Jo and rookie Rey (see EP) before
declaring a mechanical. Adding more delay by
jumping out of the car after an aborted run,
the current SFR OSP champion took three runs after
most of the OSP field had completed 2 or all 3.
His third (officially second) was good enough
for the win, and his fourth was good enough to
get a PA declaration that he was the "class
dominator."
On Sunday, Archie had a tougher time claiming his
seventh OSP win of the season as he needed
all three runs to best Rich Urschel's first. Had
Rich's AP/OSP Lotus not eaten a piece of foam
through a ripped fabric air duct....next time, sir.
Steve Carlson picked up a 4th and 3rd, Hung-jen
claimed 3rd and 6th, with Tom Kubo stepping up
his pace with two fifths. Steve Bradford pushed
his way to 6th on Saturday, before claiming 4th
on Sunday while he and Bret Norgaard quickly
corded the Escort's front tires. Anthony Abeleda,
chasing Jo Jo Collantes for the final fifth place trophy
in the SFR regular season triumphed both days
but had a scant four point advantage to show
for it. Glenda Manangan ran solo both days in OSPL.
F125 Karts saw Steve Sharp and Darren Maddams
over Pete Mottaz and Veron Head running a newly
built engine. Sunday saw Mr. deja vu Mottaz
taking it from Maddams, Sharp, and Head. Derek
had to sit out both days as a Friday night scoundrel
made off with the Head's junior kart. Peter garnered
unwanted attention Saturday while breaking in
(with permission) his new engine on a non-sanctioned
area of the airport runways.
SFR's indexed class participants were scattered
across many run groups as they were required to
run in the Divisional's class groupings. Bring
your calculator to this event and watch every
run group for signs that various Divisional
competitors might be claiming competition in
your class at the Regional level, then wait
for the published results to see if you guessed
right.
The Rookie Street Prepared guys guessed pretty
much right. Rey Manalac (EP) took the Saturday
win over Chris Halton (DSP), Chris Strahorn (DSP),
Carl Merritt (ASP), Michael Moal (ESP), and Lee
Darzycki (ASP). On Sunday Chris Halton was pointedly
asked to remove the Toyo Proxies (40 treadwear)
from his Datsun 510 and dropped to 8th after switching
to A509 Yoke's. Carl Merritt took the win over Manalac,
Strahorn, Moal, Darzycki, and Glenn Nakata (OSP).
In Rookie Stock 1, Trygve Isaacson (AS) bested Damien
and Stuart Teitelbaum (CS) each day.
Rookie Stock 2 belonged to DS's Doug Tejeda on Saturday
and to Patrick Simmons on Sunday.
Rookie CSP running together in the CSP run group as usual
saw Peter Hsu taking the win over Dennis Armstrong and
Sharon Levy with Dennis and Sharon claiming first and
second in Peter's absence on Sunday.
David Parker (FS) took his second Street Tire class win
on Saturday over Kirk Meline (ESP), and two-time winner
Brent Nordmann (AS). Class points leader Meline scored
his first indexed win on Sunday followed by Nordmann,
Terry Campbell (ST), Dietrich Schultz (CSP), and Scott
Zediker in his new BS Miata. Victoria Szeto took two
from Linda Traves in the Street Tire Ladies class.
PAX class regulars Teresa Neidel (1-3), Derek Butts (2-4),
Jesse Wills (3-1), Kevin McCormick (4-7), Katie Kelly
(5-6), Rod McLane (6-2), Andy McKee (7-8), and Charlie
Davis (8-5) scored indexed SFR points while chasing
Divisional open class trophies. The real Andy McKee
was present, but running the underdeveloped Porsche
968 in AS for this event.
