Looking back on Year 2003 - Gordy
Solo II - Harriman
Three active Chapters (Bay Area, Fresno, Sacramento), TH Chapter has not
been active this past year. Level of activity relates to how close to SFR.
Solo II community is a significant part of our club basis. Everyone works
and competes. Bay Area Chapter had 22 events (Summer Series and Slush
Series) plus the Pro Tour and Pro event. $5 surcharge/car goes into the
Solo II Site Fund, which has approximately $300,000. Site Committee is
working on a business plan and looking at a potential site. Goal is to
have it close to Bay Area and available within the next couple of years.
Vintage - Smith/Goronsky
Goal is to make this a fun event and back to the atmosphere of the early
days of road racing. Provides a great social time. The 2003 event was held
on a beautiful weekend, although down on the number of entries from 2002.
Hope to have a Spring date in Northern CA in 2005 in conjunction with the
OR Region.
Road Racing - Nosler
Asked if the schedule was too aggressive? This was a great year for
Drivers, events are well attended with only one having less than 200
entrants. Facing the challenge of exploding numbers of Spec Miatas and the
shrinking of some classes; have expanded to 8 run groups. Dave Arken would
like to see fewer groups and more racing--try to get 85 minutes track time
for each event. Competition Director and BoD members have met with every
run group and some groups are holding meetings on their own. Our Race
Officials bring a wonderful professionalism to the events.
Rally Program - Grantz
Rally Cross, along with the Rally School, is a fledgling program made up
of 5 Rally Crosses and 1 Performance Rally School at a small site at
Thunderhill. Consider it an Auto Cross on dirt. Cars do not have to be
street legal and no hardtops are allowed. Have very dedicated members.
2004 program will be the same; would like to find another site and more
people. Greg Montgomery has served as the Rally Chief and will be putting
up displays at the Moscone Auto Show. Bill Jonesi is working on a small
scale T&D gimmick rally. BoD thanks Sherry for becoming a Rally Safety
Steward.
Membership - Smith
More aggressive program this year. All new members or anyone expressing
interest in SFR-SCCA receives a call from Pilar Miranda, who takes them
through the process of determining area of interest. If Road Racing, merge
into Ambassadors program; if Solo II, into contact with Bryan Nemy; if
Road Rally, into contact with Sherry Grantz. Process is being refined as
the database is being developed. New members seem to truly appreciate the
calls back. Thanks to Pilar, Sherry Grantz, Dave Harriman, Dave Allen,
Wayne and Anna Coturri, and Laura Stitch for their help. Suggestion of
calls to those who dont renew membership. Also have the ability to
check who raced last year and not this year--these drivers could be
contacted to see why not. Contacts to High School/Community College
automotive classes has worked in the TH area. Perhaps we should look at
other high school instructors. Goal is increasing the number of active
members.
Treasurer's Report - Nosler
Continue to operate in the black, although the revenue is down. Frequent
Racer Program, which cost about $30,000, was only about 50% redeemed. The
50 + 5 party was a one time expense on the books. The Wheel and Annual
banquet are ongoing expenses, although Wheel expenses have been reduced by
cleaning up the mailing database. We have the ability to respond on level
of expenditures if we go into the red due to reduced entries.
Update on Thunderhill and Building - Smith/Vodden
Smith reported that being President of Properties has been a fun year.
This is the end of the 10th year of TH Park and the 15th year since the
concept. The new building is the greatest achievement and thanks to all
who participated in the development. Users others than SFR really like it.
The first phase of worker camping was the availability of power. The play
park has been renovated. All garages are rented. The new kitchen is the
best functionally. The bridge allows Turn 9 viewing and water has been
located 160 ft deep and it flows at 26 gal./min.
Goals for 2004 include the following:
Formal water inspections and a formal training program to maintain state
water permits.
Evaluate need for asphalt repaving and continue to set funds aside for
this project. Current asphalt is still good; will bring in an expert to
evaluate. New technology is this field is now available. Look at the
runoff area of each turn and set priorities. Do not want to make the turns
wider. Need to keep in mind the needs of the motorcycle riders who make up
50% of our customers.
Second phase for worker camping will involve Shannon Ell, Operating
Manager, determining how to make it a better place, more visibly
comfortably, extend asphalt to electrical connections, correct the
drainage problems, and have a grassy area along the fence for tents.
Provide profit for our owner, San Francisco Region. A dividend check of
$50,000 will be presented early next year.
Where Are We Going - Gordy
New SFR SCCA Mission Statement
San Francisco Region: The finest amateur motor sports club.
New Values
1. Professionalism
2. Friendliness
3. Integrity
4. Respect
PERF will be highlighted on stationary, acceptance letters, schedules, and
banners. Region Chiefs will be asked to adhere to these values as they
work with volunteers.
Schedule for 2004
Preliminary schedule was distributed. The Double National with Reno,
planned for 2 1/2 days, is still tentative. Needs approval from the
National BoD as well as 75% of the NorPac Regions; in the process of
obtaining these approvals. Planning for 3 SMC events in our series this
year. Long term goal is to have WSC moved early in the Fall, but couldnt
make it happen this year. Extensive discussion ensued about the schedule.
Auto Show
Starts this evening at the Moscone Center; dates are Nov. 23-30, 10 AM -
10 PM. We have a new hall opened to us this year. Brings many people into
our midst. Over 54 cars will be on display. Wayne and Anna Coturri have
done a tremendous job in organizing and still looking for volunteers.
Signup sheet made available.
NorPac Round Table
Information
made available. Chiefs are urged to attend. VIP points can be used for
Registration.
Key Initiatives:
Member Input
Bill Schooley asked if we could have an Annual Pass track release at
Thunderhill. Action: To be evaluated.
George Ott stated that there is inequity in paddock space. Gordy stated
that we needed a Paddock Marshal, especially at TH.
Bruce Johns asked why HP was excluded from WSC and what was the rational
for making it a restricted regional. Lack of participation in certain
classes was the reason given, but will address this next year.
Greg Mercurio stated that there are places on the TH track which are
uncomfortable for cars with low suspension.
John Brookman stated that the costs of motels in Willows has increased.
Vodden stated the change in ownership is the primary reason.
Susan Dynarski discussed the difficulties at Grid when 8 AM starts are
scheduled at TH.
Training Plans for Crews - Gordy
The training and licensing of our Race Officials is what sets us apart
from our competition. Pointed out the need for formal training plans for
all crews. Also the expectations for which we strive will be discussed
further at the Chiefs Meeting.
Closing - Gordy
Adjournment (B. Brunner/S. Dynarski): To adjourn at 2:45 PM.
Social
All invited to stay for tea/coffee and hors d'oeuvres.
Respectfully Submitted,
Barbara McClellan, Secretary
