6/4/97 An informal Chiefs meeting was called together for the purpose of having a heart to heart discussion about where the club was financially and what business actions the Board of Directors planned on taking (i.e. the board of directors talking to management). The meeting started at 7:05 p.m. Board members present were:Gary Pitts, Pete Wagner, Tom McCarthy, Kevin Jenkins, Steve Archer and Sal Versaggi (Clint deWitt could not attend because of a prior commitment). The meeting was held at Ian Cook's place of business (Valley Import Center). Although no roll call was taken there seemed to be good attendance (20 +-Chiefs). Gary started the meeting by reporting the final surplus of monies from the prior year. He then explained that it appears the Club is headed for a projected financial loss of $60,000 +- for the 1997 year. The primary reasons for this expected downturn in funds was the loss of Spec. Renault; (-$35,000) and the increase in track rental at Laguna Seca. Along with that, deferred maintenance on equipment has also caught up with us. Gary then explained that we as a Club, are no longer an exclusive member of the motorsports community since we now have competition to deal with and said competition was marketing and dealing with marketing on a daily basis, something that the members of the B.O.D. could not and probably should not do. The B.O.D. therefore felt that a part time marketing consultant, at the very least, was needed. Furthermore the most logical person for the job was David Vodden, especially since this was part of his role prior to moving over to Properties. The meeting then opened up for input and feedback. Much orderly constructive discussion ensued in which management let the B.O.D. know how they felt (i.e. D The B.O.D. listened-Management talked, the B.O.D. responded).
