David Schultz who worked on the Emergency crew for many years, passed away June 20, 2011 after a short and hard-fought battle with cancer. Dean Stoker reports that David Schultz worked with SFR for 20 years or so as a fireman/EMT, and his wife Eliana worked closely with me in the Safety Marshal specialty. Born and raised in San Francisco, David was proud to be the son of a WWII and Korean War veteran. He earned his degree in Motor Controls from the College of San Mateo. He went on to use his electrical skills in many talented ways. David was always helping his family and friends build and fix things. David built stages for rock and roll bands during the 60's and 70's in Golden Gate Park and was a key designer/builder of the stage at the Altamont Concert. He worked at the Hunter's Point Naval Shipyards where he proudly assisted in retrofitting the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea. This experience furthered his love of carriers and U.S. naval history. He was a fireman at heart always and served as a volunteer San Francisco firefighter/EMT for many years. David carried this passion to the San Francisco Region of the Sports Car Club of America where he volunteered on the rescue squad for 20 years. He loved training new recruits on the techniques of race car crash rescue. David began his 30 year career as a Local 39 Stationary Engineer at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. He loved fixing things, particularly for patients recovering in the burn center. He met his best friend and beloved wife, Eliana, while working at the hospital. David then worked in the concrete canyons of downtown SF before signing on at the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center. He was especially proud of providing building electrical and technical skills to the Veteran's Building tenants, our war veterans. David enjoyed working with his War Memorial union brothers for 19 years. His passion for military history inspired him to assist war veterans in other ways. David volunteered at the San Bruno American Legion Post 409, helping them fix up the place and building them a proper office. The respect he held for war veterans was second to none. Woodworking was another of David's passions. The garage was his domain and workshop where he spent most weekends designing and completing projects to make his home better. In addition to his workshop, he built an extensive radio room for his interest in ham radio communications. From a very young age as a Cub Scout, he acquired radio knowledge and skills from one of his teachers who sparked his interest. As KA6JHS, David collected QSL cards communicating over the air with ham radio operators from all over the world. Together, David and Eliana built a special life together for 29 years. He is missed by his family and close friends for his sincere love of his wife, for his skills and knowledge which he shared willingly, and his passion and commitment of his life interests. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in his name to the American Legion Post 409, 757 San Mateo Avenue, San Bruno, 94066.
