Long-time SCCA member and racer Chuck Forge passed away unexpectedly on the evening of August 30.

Chuck started racing in the late 50's, and was entered in the September 4-5, 2009 Double Regional at Infineon. We think that made him the longest continuously active driver in the region.  Information on services will be posted when we have it.

In Chuck’s honor, San Francisco Region will have an Honorary Pace Lap, with the Pole Position open in a “Missing Man” formation at the start of the race for Group 5 (Chuck's most recent racing position), on Saturday morning, September 5.

Email The Web Team to share your memories on Chuck's page.

I worked with Chuck at Boschert many years ago. As an on and off Porsche
addict and a one-time SCCA regional racer I stopped by to see Chuck once
in awhile to see what the "stable" looked like. A week before the Laguna
Seca Historics I pulled into his drive and found Chuck working on the
heads for his Gmund coupe.  He had parts spread (organized, mind you)
about the shop and showed off the weld repairs he had initiated to fix
valve seats which had suffered through who knows how many racing miles
and decades of refurbishing.  As Chuck explained the problem and how he
had fixed it his words came faster and his face lit up.

People have said he was an engineer's engineer, usually alluding to
Chuck's focus on the details and tremendous ability to tease out an
effective answer to an engineering problem. (Chuck solved some problems
in switching power supply designs that stumped a whole bunch of other
very smart people.)  I'll absolutely agree Chuck was a hellofa engineer,
but not just because he was damn good at solving tough technical
problems but because he delighted in the exercise.  I enjoyed listening
to his plans for building an engine, modifying a suspension system or
describing a problem some client had dropped in his incredibly capable
lap.  As his monologue went along he would delve into design,
metallurgy, history of design, alternative components, clever ideas he'd
heard of and anything else which impacted the project at hand.  As he
talked his passion for his topic seemed to energize him.

I can't claim to have known Chuck well but I admired his capabilities, his passion and
his humanity.  I was looking forward to another couple decades during
which I would stop by and see what he was up to.  God Speed, Chuck.

Chuck was our most special Porsche racing friend. He and Clint raced each  other door handle to door handle for over 30 years without ever touching each other's cars. I was told today that his 914 is all ready to race the Double Regional. How could we have known as we said goodbye at Laguna that it really WAS goodbye.

I just noticed the note about Chuck Forge.  That's really too bad.  He was such a nice fellow. In the early- to mid-eighties, I crewed for Alex Rapold, who raced TR4s and an MGB in E-Prod. We raced against Chuck. Chuck, Hardy Prentice, Rich Bontempi, and Bob Small were the class of the field. Chuck was always there to lend a hand, if needed...a real gentleman racer. I was hoping to see him at the CSRG race @ Sears in a few weeks. Very sad...
