Stewards are assigned by SCCA to perform various duties to ensure the safety, timeliness, and fairness of the event
Stewards are race experienced drivers and workers that are trained to supervise road racing events. They are present to facilitate your weekend under the rules and regulations of the SCCA, to ensure you have a safe, fair and fun weekend. Stewards are assigned different duties at each event on a rotating basis, based on license grade and experience.
The stewards can be categorized into two roles at an event.
- The Chief Steward and his assistants administer and operate the event. Their responsibilities are for all participants safety, race control and rules enforcement.
- The Chairman of the Stewards of the Meet and the Stewards of the Meet are the judicial arm of the steward’s organization. Their duties are to hold formal hearings over any rules enforcement sent to them by the Chief Steward and protests filed by participants.
When would I have contact with a steward? - You will talk to the steward if you are black flagged from a session for an
on-track violation or excessive sound. - You will talk to a steward if you are pulled into impound for driving behavior or mechanical problems (The rule is, if you have any body contact with another vehicle you must voluntarily stop at impound and report to the Tech Steward.)
- The Chief Steward or his assistant may call all drivers together for a drivers meeting to discuss issues unique to that event.
- As a driver, you may seek a steward out to assist you in helping you continue your weekend successfully.
- You may be having mechanical difficulty with your car and wish to have a sound or hardship lap to make sure the car is OK before your next session. You would ask to see the Chief Steward or his designee.
- You may have had a protest filed against you or your car and need to ask advice of an experienced racer familiar with the club’s judicial process. You would ask to see the steward assigned to be the driver advisor for the weekend.
- You may want to find out your sound readings. You can ask the steward assigned to black flag or the Tech Steward for this information and they will relay your request to Race Administration.
