Obtaining a specific car number is a complex process in San Francisco Region

San Francisco Region uses an Annual Reserved Number system, often referred to as a “Permanent Number”. There is actually no permanent number system. Reserved numbers are assigned on an annual basis, and must be renewed each year.

Since most SFR race groups contain several classes of cars, numbers are assigned by group not by class. This is why it can be difficult to obtain the exact number you want, even though there may be only two or three cars in your class.

Annual reserved car numbers are granted to any San Francisco Region driver who competes in three Regional and/or National races in the San Francisco Region during the current or preceding race season.

In January, any driver who entered five or more Regional and/or National races in the preceding year is automatically assigned his reserved number for that year. A driver who ran at least three races, but fewer than five, must reapply for a reserved number by January 31.
Reserved numbers are only held through the race deadline. If you have a reserved number, but enter after the deadline, your number may no longer be available. This makes enough numbers available for everyone who enters a race.

If you do not have a reserved number, you put three number choices on your entry form. After deadline, the Region Office assigns numbers. They will do their best to give you one of your number choices or a number that is closest to your choices. If you really do not like the assigned number, you can call the Region Office and work with them to change to something else that is not already taken.

Drivers new to San Francisco Region must enter three SFR races before they can apply for a reserved number. All requests for reserved numbers must be in writing and include the dates of the three completed San Francisco Region events. Three number choices should be indicated.
