John Coyle, member of the San Francisco Region board of directors in the 1960s, passed away at Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek on Aug. 29, 2007.
John Coyle co-drove with me in my '57 Corvette in the RDC Enduro at Cotati in '67. We finished fifth, and that was my best Enduro finish.
John Philip Coyle, 71, passed away at Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek on Aug. 29, 2007. John’s passion was automobile racing, from attending BCRA Midget events with his father as a young boy to racing his own B production Corvette with SCCA in the 1960s. As a member of the Sports Car Club of America, he served on its San Francisco Region board of directors in the 1960s.
John was born in Vallejo to John Philip Coyle, Sr. and Bernadette (O'Connell) Coyle. He graduated from St.Vincent's High School in Vallejo in 1954 where he met his wife-to-be, Jean Van Winden. They married in Napa in 1957 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They had been residents of El Sobrante for many years, and were former residents of Vallejo and Napa. After graduation from high school, John attended the University of San Francisco. During the 1960s, he was employed in foreign automobile sales, notably as owner of Coyle and Hampton Motors.
In the 1970s, a career shift found him a member of the Plumber's Union, employed as a planner/estimator for Christener Company of El Sobrante. From the 1980s until his retirement three years ago, John worked in industrial sales with Weill Industrial Supply Company in Richmond.
After his sports car racing days, he involved himself in YRA Sailboat Racing, a sport he introduced to his son, and Western style horse showing with his daughter. John was a member of the Napa Elks Club, and he was active with the Elks RV group. As a hobby, he enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of St. Callistus Catholic Church in El Sobrante.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Coyle of El Sobrante; one son, John T. Coyle of Vallejo; one daughter, Gina Burnett of El Sobrante; and three grandchildren, John T. Coyle, Jr., Stephen G. Coyle and Justin A. Burnett.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, 924 Napa St. in Napa. The Rosary will be held at Claffey and Rota Funeral Home, 1975 Main St. in Napa on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
