In Memory Of Michael Moore

Mike's Candle

I remember Mike as always smiling and having a good time at the track and off. He always had a kind word for me and loved racing. My heart sank when I heard of his passing.

My husband and I will miss the smile and the man.

-- Debra Kerth

Mike Moore & I go back many years – working with Mike on the turns was special as he was so talented and professional – I will miss him.

I remember working turn 8, (the straightaway), on the short course at TH when we first opened it. Mike & I bailed three times one morning and after the dust cleared slapped hands together congratulating our success on surviving, (our ears were the only resource we had).

We moved the station in the afternoon whereupon a car went right through the old station – we slapped hands again!

There are few who meet Mike’s professionalism and trust with your back turned!

-- Barbara Baldwin

My wife and I bet Mike in 1989. Mike rented my FV to go through driver’s school. It was great to be around Mike as you could tell he was just having a blast driving.

Over the following years of racing, Mike would often drop by in the pits in the morning or evening to wish us luck and ask how the day had been. He always brought that warm smile and twinkle in his eye.

There were times while I was racing that I would spot Mike flagging. I have this vivid mental image of Mike popping through a hole in the fence exiting T11 at Laguna to show me “5 minutes left”. I have other images of him telling me “half-way”.

When you saw Mike on the edge of the track, you knew your were in good hands. Partly because of the excellent team of flaggers Mike led……partly because of Mike.

Mike, thanks for having crossed our paths in life.

-- Bradley Kerth, FV

Oh man ! Where to begin? I'm going to miss you dude! I could always trust you with my life whenever we worked together. I'd be your yellow flagger, exist 6a, Sears Point, any day! (As long as your allergies weren't acting up) Remember those days? I'll never forget them!

Mike and I started flagging together in the mid 80's and the friendship blossomed from there. We were two kids out of college from opposite ends of the bay..East Bay vs. West Bay..9ers, Giants vs. Raiders, A's. Our common interest in the love of racing brought us together every race weekend. We were "the tent people". We'd find a place to setup no matter how bad they conditions. Mike had a way to make everything Moore fun! Who could ever forget him doing his Bill Murray impression from Caddy Shack? He'd have me in tears whenever he break into it.

I'll miss that Cheshire cat smile and your sense of humor. I know your in a better place now.

Say "Hi" to Billy Tow, Grace, Don & Lucy for me!

We only met Mike once. But it was a memorable meeting and worth sharing .It was 30 March and Mike was with his parents and family on Lake Powell enjoying what was,and was planned to be,a final holiday. We were just an inexperienced English family having some fun with a houseboat.Inexperience has its price and as night fell,we stranded the boat in a creek-withoout a paddle,so to speak

Jennifer and Robin,Mike's sister and friend, tried to rescue us but to no avail. As a strong smell of gas developed,we were advised by Wahweap Park Services to abandon ship. Not easy with 40 degree nights and no campgear. So,enter the Moores."Come aboard" they say.Small catch, they are a mile away across treacherous sandbars and it's pitch black. Notwithstanding, they come to save us.

We make it safetly back to their boat to be greeted by Judy and the family. They have cleared a cabin-there are 7 of them on boord and there are 5 of us (three under 12).Jack Daniels and M&Ms are served, stories told and off to bed

In the morning,Mike,Robin and Jen taught us to fish.Mike was weak but embraced the tuition with kindness and care.My 9 year old Adam(or was it me?)tangled the line and Mike and I spent a good while unscrambling the mess.Despite his pain,he had no desire to be hurried, had time to talk and added wholeheartedly to the welcome and generoristy we received

This is a tribute not only to Mike but to his family. We experienced kindness and warmth on a superhuman scale. If this reflects some part of Mike'slife, we should all hope and pray for the strength to do no less in our lifetimes

May Mike rest in peace and with our loving thoughts

I'm going to miss you buddy, but I'll always know you got my back.

Mike, I am going to miss you. It was always good to see you smiling face and hear your voice. All of those race weekends... some out on the turns together, other times watching you in your Crusader out on the track....some of the best club racing comes from the FV's...

I recall one time at Sears Point when you showed up in worker camping with a rod and reel... "fishing" you said, responding to the dumb question of "whatcha doin, Mike?" duh.. :-) I thought you were crazy. It turns out there actually WAS fish in that pond out behind T8, not that anyone would want to eat them. But that wasn't what it was all about. It was the fun of catching and releasing them. I always wanted to experience that with my friend at least one time and I truly regretted not making the time to do so when I found out that day last fall that Mike was sick...

I also recall borrowing his CRX one NASCAR weekend. We were all camped in a cramped little space between two shops at Sears Point. I always got there early in the weekend which meant my truck was locked in for the weekend. Mike was kind enough to loan me his car to go get ice and supplies for a bunch of us. Amazing enough, the supplies and I fit in that little car...

I also enjoyed talking about his work. I never thought anyone could understand the trading that he did. He tried to explain it all to me many times, but it never made any sense to me. Sorry Mike, I just don't get all those puts and calls, whatchamacallits and thingamajigs. But it was still fascinating. He thought I was nuts.

Mike cares deeply about his family, and even brought his father out to the races on occasion. I admired that, and it inspired me to bring my dad out to see what makes auto racing unique to those of us who love it so.

Mike is an amazing person, a beautiful person. He is soft spoken, intelligent and caring, even despite the fact he is an avid Raiders fan. I understood that feeling, growing up in the east bay as he did, and I recall the joy he experienced when he found out his Raiders were returning from LA

I speak in the present tense about Mike as he's still here with us. We may not see his physical being any longer, but he's touched all us who knew him in ways that we will never forget. He's just that kind of person.

Godspeed my friend. I will always have fond thoughts of you.

-- Gregg Schlaman

Mike..Thank you for being there for me and thank you for letting me be there for you. You meant the world to me. I love you Mikey.

We received the following word from Mike Neff & Colin Cross this past weekend:

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Mike Moore lost his battle this weekend with pancreatic cancer.

I know many of you were close freinds with him, and join me in a moment of silence in his memory.

For those of you who didn't get the opportunity to know Mike, he was a former flag chief, who devoted much time to San Francisco Region. We will all miss him.

-- Mike Neff, Flagging Crew

The SFR Webteam expresses their condolences to his family and friends, as we recall the many evenings of bench racing at the Social gatherings.
